The Virginia General Assembly passed three transformational bills during the 2022 session that make Virginia a progressive leader in the South.

The Democratic majority in the Senate was a brick wall in defeating Republican proposals to reverse progress that Democrats had achieved in improving access to abortion care, gun safety measures, climate change and voting that had passed a Republican controlled House of Delegates. For now, Senator Favola and her caucus colleagues succeeded in ensuring that our children will have a more fair, inclusive and economically vibrant future, but that fight continues and depends upon your vote. The Democrats hold a two vote margin in the Senate. New elections will be held in November 2023.

I firmly stand with my fellow Virginia lawmakers, AAPI leaders, local allies, and the community at-large in condemning the persistent rise in anti-Asian hate in Virginia and across the country. It is time that we acknowledge the impact of hateful rhetoric and the persistent scapegoating of Asians during this pandemic. The newly created Virginia Asian American and Pacific Islander Caucus (#VAAPIC) will bring much needed attention and support to the important work of eradicating systemic racism. Actions of hate against one of us are actions of hate against all of us.

In Virginia, I will work to ensure that police receive training on how to de-escalate encounters and commit to using the minimum amount of force necessary to control the situation. Every Virginian must be able to work, learn, and live without fear of harassment, prejudice, violence, or deadly force — particularly from those charged with serving and protecting all communities.

This new law is transformational. It ensures that Virginians will no longer have to worry about facing unexpected medical bills when they receive health care. Achieving this victory for Virginia patients and families took many long hours of negotiations with a diverse group of stakeholders who share a common belief that patients should not be burdened with the task of negotiating an outstanding medical bill with their insurance company. Patients recovering from medical care should focus on healing, not the emotional and financial anxieties of resolving unexpected, expensive medical bills that can explode household budgets and place families at risk of bankruptcy. Under this law, patients will no longer be responsible for unexpected medical expenses once they have met their deductible and co-payment obligation. I am proud to have worked on this successful effort that balances the interests of patients, providers, and insurers and that enshrines in the law important financial protections for Virginians when they seek health care.

Thank You

“It is an honor and privilege to represent the constituents of the new 40th Senate District. As a former member of the Arlington County Board, a return to representing almost every part of the County truly feels like a homecoming.

In line with Arlington’s values, I will continue to fight for a woman’s reproductive freedom, pass gun safety measures, increase teacher pay and funding for public schools, address climate change, expand transit options, and improve housing affordability, among other issues. Enhancing your quality of life is important to me and creating a more fair and just society is a calling that I am compelled to embrace.

Thank you for your confidence, trust, and support. Together, we will move Virginia forward.” — Senator Favola, December of 2023
