Gun Violence Prevention

Senator Favola has worked tirelessly to reduce the incidence of gun violence in Virginia. She believes that every Virginian should be able to live, work, go to school, and worship safely, without fear of gun violence. She has advocated for commonsense laws that make Virginia safer, including: requiring universal background checks, enacting red flag laws, and closing the gun show loophole. She also passed legislation creating the Virginia Gun Violence Intervention and Prevention Fund, which provides grants to support evidence-based violence intervention and prevention efforts. Senator Favola believes that we can and must do more to prevent gun homicides and suicides. She will continue to work to ban assault weapons, outlaw ghost guns, and require safe storage of firearms.

The combination of gun violence and intimate partner violence is particularly lethal, with nearly one in three homicides in Virginia being connected to intimate partner violence. Senator Favola has fought to combat this issue by working to remove firearms from domestic abusers. She helped to pass laws to prohibit gun possession by individuals subject to protective orders and by individuals convicted of assaulting a family member. Senator Favola has also been a leader in efforts to close the boyfriend loophole in Virginia, and will continue to push for this much-needed reform to keep women and victims safe.

Senator Favola is proud to have been endorsed by the Giffords organization and the Brady Campaign, and to have been named a Moms Demand Action Gun Sense Candidate in her 2023 election.
