Affordable Housing & Tenant Rights

Senator Favola knows that individuals and families need safe and affordable housing to thrive. Housing costs in Arlington and throughout Northern Virginia are concerningly high, and the skyrocketing prices are exacerbated by a shortage of housing options. The rental market in Arlington is consistently ranked as one of the top ten most expensive markets in the country.

Senator Favola has worked to expand the supply of affordable housing, especially for our vulnerable populations. She is a leader in securing increased state funding for the Affordable Housing Trust Fund. This additional money paved the way for more affordable housing projects in Arlington such as the new veteran-focused Terwilliger apartment complex in the Virginia Square neighborhood. Senator Favola also worked to earmark state funding for supportive housing units. These units offer housing combined with services that are designed for low-income individuals facing medical or behavioral health challenges. She has been recognized by the Arlington Partnership for Affordable Housing and the Arlington Housing Corporation for her efforts to create more affordable housing.

Senator Favola has worked to protect tenant rights, passing legislation to require that tenants facing eviction be provided with contact information for legal services programs. She also supported legislation to prevent landlords from discriminating against tenants based on their sexual orientation, gender identity, or source of funds (i.e. whether they use housing vouchers or other subsidies to pay rent).
