Barbara's Accomplishments

Introduction:  During my time on the County Board, I have led efforts to improve the lives of Arlingtonians in significant ways.  Highlighted below a just a few of these accomplishments.  I am also humbled to note that these successes would not have been possible without the commitment and work of many caring Arlingtonians.

Human Services
The Head Start program now has a permanent home in the George Mason Center with much needed space for Early Head Start.

Construction on an Assisted Living Facility for those elderly with mental health and developmental delay challenges will begin this year.

Affordable Housing:
Arlington now has a “Housing First” policy.  This policy has successfully created affordable housing with supportive services for those transitioning into independence.

More and more jurisdictions in the Greater Washington Metropolitan region have adopted policies to preserve and create affordable housing as a result of my four-year chairmanship of the Washington Area Housing Partnership.

Environment:
Arlington adopted the first comprehensive water-shed plan in the region.

Upgrades were made to the Water Pollution Control Plant that resulted in significant decreases in the nitrogen levels of purified water.

Tree replacement strategies significantly deterred stream erosions.

Smart Growth Development:
Mixed Use and mixed income development in Arlington’s Rosslyn-Ballston corridor has made “living near your work” a planning principle that is emulated around the region.

Arlington is known for community-centered development that supports the County’s principles of increasing affordable housing, creating a “green” community and pedestrian friendly amenities.

Summary:  In the next four years, I will continue to be guided by a set of core values that recognizes the worthiness of each individual, celebrates diversity, respects our environment, ensures first-class public schools and provides a safety net for the most vulnerable among us.
